Defensive Handgun Necessities I is the foundational course for civilians seeking to develop effective self-defense skills with a pistol.
This course focuses on essential techniques and mindset necessary to responsibly and confidently use a handgun for personal protection.
Emphasis is placed on safety, fundamental shooting skills, and practical applications for real-world self-defense scenarios crucial for individuals who intend to carry a handgun.
Key Topics Covered:
- Weapon Safety and Handling: Learn the critical rules for safe firearm operation and storage.
- Marksmanship Fundamentals: Master the core principles of accurate shooting, including grip, stance, and trigger control.
- Holster Skills: Practice drawing, presenting, and firing your pistol safely and efficiently from a holster.
- Reloading Techniques: Build confidence in performing smooth, rapid reloads under pressure.
- Malfunction Clearing: Develop the ability to quickly diagnose and resolve firearm malfunctions.
This dynamic, hands-on, 9-hour course combines classroom instruction with live-fire exercises in a supportive, small-group environment to ensure personalized coaching.
To successfully complete the course, participants must pass a shooting qualification, demonstrating safe handling and competency with a handgun.
Upon completion, students who meet all safety and performance requirements will receive a Certificate of Training, recognizing their readiness and dedication to responsible self-defense practices.

Required Items
• Handgun (semi-auto or revolver)
• A suitable, strong-side OWB or thigh rig holster (holster must provide positive retention so the firearm does not fall out) hard plastic or Kydex type holster. NO IWB holsters are permitted for this course.
• Minimum 3 HI CAP or 5 Single stack magazines or speed loaders / speed strips (10 Rounds or more)
• Magazine Holster/Pouch to hold your spare ammunition (can be 2 doubles or 4 singles, if using 4 magazines total. This is a minimum requirement)
• 300 rounds of ammunition
• Ear protection and wrap around eye protection (Mandatory)
• Long pants with belt loops and a sturdy belt.
• Lightweight clothing and light in color, avoid black (NO tank tops or V-necks)
• Sturdy, closed toe shoes (athletic, hiking, outdoor styled shoes. NO open toe shoes)
• Spare batteries for sights and tools for sight adjustment
• Ball cap or brimmed hat
• Sun screen
• Insect repellent
• Snacks and lunchtime meals
• ONE GALLONS of water per person (min) or other liquids to remain hydrated
• Note Taking Materials
• Weapons and/or ammunition can supplied by TFA upon request
